Help Karl, Raquel, and Lula Hugo...

On Monday, July 14th 2008 Karl Hugo was in a serious bicycle collision with a truck in the intersection of SE 50th and Lincoln, a well traveled bike route for SE Portland cyclists. Karl was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in SW Portland where he arrived in a coma, with one collapsed lung, and severe trauma to the Thalamus region of his brain. He is currently receiving quality care at OHSU where doctors say he still has the potential to recover fully. Karl's friends, family and SE Portland neighbors have come together in support of his wife Raquel and 3 year old daughter Lula. They all send prayers and the best of intentions to Karl as they wait for his return.

Raquel and Karl are husband and wife, mama and papa, co-teachers and partners. In their design business, Urban Opposite, they work side by side designing educational play environments for children and adults. Prior to the establishment of their business Karl was the exhibit designer for The Portland Children's Museum, responsible for the design of The Dorthia Lynch Memorial Children's Theatre, Building Bridgetown, Kids Care and Dig Pit exhibits. There in the spaces he created are Raquel's mural art and color. The children you find playing in the environments they created are an expression of the spirit they had in making them.

Their professional partnership has been dedicated to the enrichment of children and families, including their own.

They are currently in the middle of two large design projects and are in a difficult place financially, with the cost of medical care and the absence of Karl as business partner. They, like so many, do not have health insurance so any financial support you can offer would greatly help this beautiful family.
